Savanne Carre School
There was a small three-room school at Savanne Carre when
the twinning relationship began in 2000; however, there were between 7-8 classes
being held at a time. Many of the classes simply met outside under the shade of
some of the huge trees in the courtyard area. In time of bad weather, they
would move into the chapel and conduct those many classes simultaneously in the
same, shared space -- with each class simply facing a different direction.
In 2005, St Mary sent money to construct a new 10-room school. It was laid
out in the shape of an "L" with eight of the classes along the long part of the
"L" and two situated perpendicular on the shorter side. Kyle Newell was there
in March 2005 and saw the construction well under way. By the time the December
2005 group arrived, the school was completed and fully painted. One of the
rooms is now used for the principal’s office and one for storage for the
school. There is a walkway that extends the entire length of the school that is
under the overhang of the roof -- providing protection from both sun and rain.
The school does not have any electrical power. Therefore, each of the
classrooms has part of the front and back wall made out of concrete block that
is "windowed" thereby letting in needed light.
