Want To Get Involved? - Travel With Us
Anyone who feels called to
go with us on one of our trips to Haiti is welcome to join us. While you do not
need to have a medical background to go with us, we are always looking for
doctors, nurses, and pharmacists to assist us our medical missions that we take
to Pendus. Our trips are usually 7-9 days in length and we typically try to have
a trip in mid-March to coincide with the feast of St. Joseph and one during
Christmas break. We try to limit our groups to 12 people. When you add a couple
interpreters and the drivers to escort us, the logistics of transporting,
housing and feeding our group quickly becomes difficult for our hosts with any
larger of a group.
It may be obvious, but the first requirement is to obtain a
US
passport. You need to allow at least two months for the application process
to be completed. The next consideration is immunizations. You need to contact
your doctor -- or the Arnett Clinic travel clinic -- to see what is needed for
the trip you are anticipating taking with us. You can also check out the
Center for Disease Control's (CDC) site which contains a wealth of
information about travel to Haiti. One other requirement for you to join
one of our groups is to sign a
waiver form.
The typical cost of a trip -- which you are required to pay for yourself -- is
approximately $375 plus the cost of the airplane ticket. The $375 (could be more
if there is a small group) covers the first night and last night spend at
Matthew 25 Guest House in Port-au-Prince and our transportation to and from the
airport, our travel to and from Pendus, our food while in Pendus and our
interpreters. Airline ticket prices are the biggest portion of the cost of a
trip. Depending on the time of year, those prices have fluctuated from the
$450-$500 range, but increases in fuel costs could make the ticket cost higher.
If you are interested, there usually are a couple opportunities to purchase some
Haitian handiwork at both Matthew 25 and in Gros Morne. Lastly, check with
your tax advisor as your travel expenses (airline ticket and lodging costs) may
be
tax deductible.

If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask them as well. A good read for
anyone considering such a missionary trip is What About Short-Term Mission?
